Wire ropes are constructed with either fiber or steel wire cores. The core supports and stabilizes the outer strands during use. It offers a flexible foundation that accommodates movement or relative shifting and permits deformation of the strands when the rope bends around a sheave. If the core is improperly sized or made from substandard material, the rope will not perform correctly and its lifespan will be reduced.
There are two main types of rope core—Fibre(FC) and steel (IWRC or WSC)
Fiber Core (FC)
This core is made from either natural fibers or polypropylene and offers excellent elasticity. Additionally, the fiber core is treated with a lubricant during production, which provides internal lubrication and helps reduce internal corrosion and wear between wires.
Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC)
Typically consisting of a separate 7×7 wire rope around which other wire strands are laid, the steel core enhances the rope’s strength by 7% and its weight by 10%. Steel cores offer greater support than fiber cores throughout the rope’s lifespan, ensuring even stress distribution and maintaining the rope’s shape. They are also more resistant to crushing, distortion, and heat, thereby increasing the rope’s overall strength.
Wire Strand Core (WSC)
The WSC provides similar benefits to the IWRC, offering strong support for the outer strands. It is commonly used in wire ropes with diameters less than 13 mm.

The process begins with wire drawing, where large steel rods are pulled through a series of dies to reduce their diameter. This process is repeated multiple times to achieve the desired thickness. The resulting wires are strong and have uniform diameters, essential for the integrity of the final product.
In this step, individual wires are twisted together to form strands. The image shows multiple wires being fed into a stranding machine. Depending on the required construction, these strands can be made from various wire configurations (e.g., 1×7, 1×19, 6×7). For some wire ropes, strands undergo a compaction process to increase density and reduce the diameter. This compaction enhances the rope’s strength and fatigue resistance, making it suitable for more demanding applications.
The next step involves twisting the strands together to form the final wire rope. This is known as closing or laying. Different constructions such as 6×19 or 7×7 are achieved by varying the number and arrangement of strands.
For additional protection, some wire ropes are coated with materials like PVC.
